There's one thing I wish every client understood before they touched a single product: your skin barrier isn't what causes problems — it's what takes the hit. Hormones, environment, diet, stress, lifestyle — they all show up on your skin eventually.
When your barrier starts to break down is usually where things start to unravel.
"Skin barrier" is one of those phrases that's gotten so trendy, it's almost lost its meaning — so let's actually break it down.
Think of it like a brick wall. Your skin cells are the bricks. The lipids holding it all together — ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids — are the mortar. That wall is your barrier, and its job is bigger than most people realize: it locks moisture in, keeps irritants and bacteria out, and buffers you from UV rays and everyday stress. When it's working well, you don't think about it at all. That's the whole point.
When it's compromised, your skin tells you — and a lot of it comes down to something called trans epidermal water loss, or TEWL. Basically, once that barrier breaks down, moisture starts escaping straight through your skin instead of staying locked in. That's why you get tightness that won't quit no matter how much you moisturize, sensitivity to products you used to tolerate fine, breakouts that don't respond the way they "should," a routine that suddenly stops working — it's not that your products stopped working, it's that the barrier holding them in stopped doing its job.
Some of it's within your control — over-exfoliating, over-cleansing, stacking too many actives, skipping SPF. Some of it isn't completely controllable— hormonal shifts, stress, sleep. Either way, once the barrier's compromised, that's where the visible breakdown starts. And the fix is almost never more product. It's usually simplifying.
This is honestly a huge part of my approach in the treatment room. After years working in a dermatology practice, I got really particular about what I'd put my name behind — not trendy, not "more is more," just formulas that actually respect the skin barrier while still getting real results, which is honestly a tough balance to strike.
That's why the lines you'll hear me talk about most — Hydrinity, Glymed Plus and a few of my professional Korean favs (Dermathod and Corthe) — are the ones I use in my own practice and reach for personally. They're not the only good products out there, but they're the ones I trust enough to build my practice around.
